The story,
An Austrian farmer refused to fight for Germany in the second world war and he faces death penalty for not doing so.
The story is not about war. It is about society’s behaviour, what will happen when he refuses to fight for his country. The whole village turned against him and his family.
It was narrated beautifully, it is the woman of the family who faces the insults from the society due to her husband’s refusal and forces him to go even if he is not willing coz that’s the implied rules of the society and by obeying only, you are allowed to live inside the society.
The whole film talks about the behaviour of the structure of society. The small village protested against him and later respect when he was forced to go to the Army Camp. You will see a lot of dimension in the behaviour of the society.
Some people will come to help her in spite of it but only to take free things from her later.
The final message was “Nothing comes from society without a price”,
